Time and Chance

You win some, you lose some. Some, though, end entirely outside of your control, and with the most devastating of outcomes. Take, for instance, the gentleman in Florida, USA. He was trapped, and killed, by falling into a sinkhole. His mistake? Sleeping in his room...in the evening. He was in his own dream world when his entire bedroom had caved in, falling some 40 feet into the Earth's crust. He was quickly buried underneath much rubble, while his brother and brother's wife had to evacuate the home as well, as the sinkhole would soon spread beneath more of the house's foundation. What a tragedy!

Ecclesiastes 9:11-12 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.
For man also doesn't know his time. As the fish that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly on them.

Do you know the feeling that comes when you are about to make a decision, then you realize that your choice'simplications will forceyou either to shift your lifestye ever so slightly toward a more positive trajectory, or else ever so slightly otherwise? Let us have...and example! So let it be written, so let it be done; an example we shall have:

On this particular day, your mind is clear and your actions practiced as you begin undertaking your various duties and leisurely desires in and on your home and home premises. There is nothing especially surprising about anything in the first few of the waking hours as you groom and feed your body and, perhaps, your soul. Moments are passing, as one might say, "as usual." As you are able to get through this time with little (or, at least, practiced) physical or mental expenditure, you come upon a new opportunity to make a choice. Now this chance is not new as in _unprecedented_, but rather as in _firstly conscious of_. It is as though you have passed the same chair for many consecutive days, only to come to realize a certain pattern had been etched upon one of its legs by its manufacturer. The pattern has always been there, since the completion of the chair, but this is the first time that you have become aware of it on purpose.

So as you see this newness in a different light, the choice before you now presents you with life-affecting ramifications. If it were deciding to mop the floor at that moment versus mopping at a later point that day, or even the next day, then this _particular_ time you would be thinking to yourself, "If I mop now, then I would have to choose whether or not to wash the dishes now. If I washed them now, then I could take care of the pets sooner, which would mean that I might get many things done earlier than usual today. In that case, I could go to sleep with less stress...."

Thus, with an arguably unnecessary extrapolation of reason, you decide to go ahead and mop the floor. The action gets accomplished as usual, but this time with an added, and felt, shift of mentality toward, rather than away from, self-advancement.

I had one of those moments just last week.

The trouble is, the moments of purposeful consciousness are beginning to increase, forcing me to choose a pathway of better-ness or of worse-ness. Somewhat begrudgingly, then, I am becoming more responsible, wishing instead to proceed throughout each day unconsiously whicl obtaining the same result.

"I would prefer not to." "O, Bartleby! O, humanity!"
